Cue the Mind Screwing scene with the characters' spirits being somehow reborn on a higher plane of existence.Ĭompared to its immediate spiritual predecessor, Mobile Suit Gundam, Ideon is a step back from Real Robot to Super Robot (the trend was discontinued with Zeta Gundam in the 80s) and as a result, features rather formulaic combat engagements. Ideon explodes and destroys what's left of Buff Clan army, since even before that, it generates a swarm of meteors that wreck Earth and Buff Clan homeplanet (destruction of other Terran colonies is Handwaved), so all sentient beings on both planets are destroyed. In The Movie, Buff Clan stages the final assault on the Solo ship and Ideon, this time with a planet-destroying Wave Motion Gun. Enough so to completely wipe all of them out. It also becomes apparent that Ideon has a will of its own and that it is displeased with the humans' wars and infighting. Towards the end of the series, every known army in the universe gangs up against the Solo crew. Along the way, many folks die and the Solo ship screws up their relationships with other Terran colonies and the Earth itself, all of whom now want Ide for themselves. This results in a rather monotonous Strategy Of The Week as Buff Clan (unsuccessfully) employs increasingly more devastating technologies and renowned military commanders to bring down the Solo ship and get their hands on Ideon. The ship and the robot contain the so-called Ide, a source of infinite energy, which a militaristic alien-but-actually-human civilization of Buff Clan is after. A group of Terran colonists on a remote planet find a Cool Starship and three bulky starfighters that combine into a Super Robot. So, for those of you who seek a comprehensive plot summary of the series, here is one. Heck, it's probably best known today as the absolute heavyweight champion of the Kill'Em All trope. Due to its angsty and bizarre ending, it is often cited as close inspiration for Neon Genesis Evangelion. The last 4 episodes were made into the movie Be Invoked. As with its sister series it had its run cut short, it was planned for 43 episodes but got pulled after 39. Once all this Ideon stuff is done I’ll probably focus solely on Kimengumi for some time and maybe start a new project sometime next year.Space Runaway Ideon (aka Densetsu Kyojin Ideon, Legendary Giant God Ideon) was the project that Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on directly after Mobile Suit Gundam. So, don’t be surprised if your “will you please sub this and that” message gets ignored – I don’t want to be a dick, but I have to draw the line somewhere to ensure the projects I already have started get completed somewhere down the line. I appreciate your support and enthusiasm for older and lesser known anime/manga but there’s only a limited amount of time I can spend on translating this material it’s still just a hobby, not a full time job. One more thing: even though this particular project is more or less complete, I’m not planning to pick up any new series right away so please don’t send me any translation requests. Subs might be iffy but not downright horrid if my memory serves right. Watch the old release if you really want to see it, I guess. As for the first movie, “A Contact”… Well, it’s mainly just a cut-down, abridged version of the events of the TV series made for people not familiar with the show, so I don’t feel a pressing need to provide subtitles for that one. After that I’ll give Be Invoked a look and depending on the quality of the existing subs I might release my own subtitles for the movie if necessary. If you happen to have noticed any typos or other dumb flubs while watching the series (no matter how minor), please report them now as I’d like to make sure the subtitles are as polished as they can possibly be before making the batch release. So, what now, you might ask? The first obvious thing left to do is to put together a batch for the entire series. Fortunately the scripts for the final missing episodes eventually got animated in the form of the movie Ideon: Be Invoked, so be sure to watch that to witness the true, intended ending… It’s quite a spectacle to behold to say the least. Anyway, as people familiar with Ideon’s production already know, the series got cancelled prematurely before the storyline was fully finished, leaving us with this rather strange and abrupt finale. Amazing, huh? Very big thanks to everyone involved in the project who helped to make this happen (Kaixe and RX in particular), and all of you Ideon fans out there who have been following us all this time. In the 3+ years this blog has been up, I finally managed to finish a full length series.
